We've been cultivating Photinia "Red Robin" on our nursery for more than 25 years. However, we're always on the looking for the latest and most innovative plant varieties in our field for our team to experiment with new varieties. In the past couple of years, we've tried several varieties of the Photinia "Carre Rouge" varieties and discovered that it is a cleaner and more compact plant, and with more red hue.
So , what are the top features of both types and what is it that makes Photinia "Carre Rouge" a great one to be watched?
Photinia "Red Robin" is an evergreen tree with a variety of uses that is suitable as a hedge, placed against walls and utilized as a 1/2 std tree once it has been trained. It thrives in all fertile soils, and can be planted in the shade or sun position. If you are looking to promote its vibrant flowering and reddish growth It is better placed in a full sun location. Flowers begin to bloom in April, and will continue to bloom until May when the plant has grown. We have observed Photinia 'Red 'Robin to get "leggy" in the course of time, if not well maintained and then allowed to run off by itself, they could reach 4 m in height and up to 4m wide.
Carre Rouge Photinia is a new and compact variety with blood red growth as well as smaller leaves, which can grow to 2.5 metres tall, almost one-quarter the height of its parent plant Photinia "Red Robin," making it a more attractive hedging choice and an easy to manage landscaping shrub. The red hue is more intense than the 'Red Robin' variety, and is it is also more resistant to cutting and shaping with a lot of force. Like 'RedRobin It produces white flowers between May and April if it is planted in a sunny location.
Production Manager Designer Robert Richardson said ''Photinia 'Carre Rouge' is red, whereas Photinia "Red Robin" changes to green. It's also compact, whereas the 'Red Robin' is known to spread out and becomes difficult to manage. It is, in my opinion, the perfect plant for almost all landscape and garden settings. And as time passes, I can only expect to see it growing in popularity."
